I went from dressing like “My body, My choice” to “His temple, His creation”. This was one of the hardest things I had to do in my life, but it had to be done. The struggle came from the fear of losing an big aspect of my voice—my style. The fitted dresses, stylish crop tops and provocative slits in skirts were all too comfortable for me. However, my comfort slowly transitioned to discomfort.

Time and time again it was getting more difficult to say that I was a Christian while dressing like a harlot. I knew it was wrong, but it was one of those things where if loving it was wrong, I didn’t want to be right. Until one day I was sitting on the floor in my closet staring at my clothes when God said to me, “Be ye Holy, for I am Holy.” I responded with “How?” and He said “Surrender.”

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” -1 Corinthians 6:19-20

It was time to surrender my thinking, my desires, my heart and lastly, my wardrobe to the Lord. There was something within me that was tied to my distasteful fashion choices. God had to empty me out to get to the root of the pattern, then He planted seeds of holiness so that growth could take place. My wardrobe hasn’t been the same since. “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” -1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

As Christians, we are supposed to glorify God with our bodies. Imagine all we do to our homes to prepare for guests. We deep clean, change decor, light candles and sometimes prepare a hearty homecooked meal. In the same way we keep our homes clean, we must keep our temples clean. Apparel is just one aspect of modesty, but it’s the aspect our newsletter, Modesty in Vogue, focuses on. The reality is that dressing modestly does not mean a creative wardrobe is impossible. After all, with God all things are possible (Matthew 9:26).

God can miraculously remove the labels of your past and clothe you in His righteousness.

“I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” -1 Timothy 2:9-10. There is an evolving pressure from society for women to dress provocatively, especially from the influence of public figures. However, scripture tells us that we are not to conform to the ways of this world (Romans 12:2).

Whether it’s being done to attract male attention or because there is an unhealed brokenness, God’s standard is still holiness. If this is your struggle, I urge you to surrender to the Lord so He can deal with the “root”. Oftentimes painful experiences causes us to develop unhealthy behaviors. He can heal the rejection, molestation, insecurity, fear, abandonment and heartbreak. God can miraculously remove the labels of your past and clothe you in His righteousness.

May this be the first step in the direction of transforming your wardrobe and we will be here with you every step of the way!

Prayer

Dear Father,

I come before you as your beloved daughter. I ask for forgiveness in not reflecting you in my wardrobe and for possibly leading others astray because of it. I ask you for strength to carry out your will in my fashion choices and ask for the desire to walk in holiness. Lord, when people look at me, I want them to see you. I give you permission to start with my heart as I chase after righteousness. Thank you for meeting me where I’m at as I journey to get to where you want me to be. In Jesus name. Amen.
